Scale Energy reaches Over 1 GW of Decentralized BESS in Development

Berlin, July 25, 2025 - Scale Energy has reached a major milestone with over 1 GW of decentralized battery storage projects now under development across Europe — just 18 months after launch. By deploying batteries directly at industrial sites, the company is accelerating the transition to a more flexible, resilient, and decarbonized energy system.

Scale Energy Reaches 1 Gigawatt of Decentralized Battery Storage Projects Under Development

Just 18 months after launch, Berlin-based startup Scale Energy announces a major milestone: over 1 gigawatt (GW) of decentralized battery storage projects are now under development across Europe.

This achievement confirms Scale Energy’s emergence as one of Europe’s fastest-growing developers of industrial battery energy storage systems (BESS) — and validates a business model designed for speed, scale, and impact.

"Crossing the 1 GW mark is more than a growth metric — it’s a signal that decentralized storage, built where energy is consumed, is gaining real traction in Europe’s energy transition," said Elias Aruna, CEO and Co-Founder of Scale Energy.

A Model Built for Industry

Instead of building greenfield battery parks far from demand centers, Scale Energy deploys batteries directly at industrial sites — leveraging underutilized grid connections and aligning with real consumption patterns. This approach offers distinct advantages:

  • Lower connection and permitting costs

  • Faster deployment — minimizing delays common in large-scale greenfield projects

  • Immediate industrial value — including battery systems at zero upfront cost, optimized for: Solar self-consumption, Peak load management, Participation in balancing and ancillary service markets
  • Lower environmental footprint — by reusing existing land and infrastructure

Supporting a Resilient and Renewable European Energy System

As Europe increases its reliance on variable renewables, decentralized battery storage is becoming essential for grid flexibility, energy security, and industrial competitiveness.

Scale Energy's solution helps industrial energy users shift consumption to low-cost periods, reduce grid fees, and participate in system services — all while reducing CO₂ emissions and increasing supply resilience.

With energy prices in Europe still significantly higher than in the US, and pressure on grid infrastructure mounting, battery storage is poised to play a central role. According to Frontier Economics, storage could reduce trading costs by over €12 billion by 2050 — and Scale Energy estimates its model could deliver €9 billion in annual savings for German industry alone.

Rapid Execution, Strong Backing

In February 2025, Scale Energy completed their seed round led by Climentum Capital, with participation from Vireo Ventures, Antler, P3A, and prominent angel investors. The company also secured a 100 MW CapEx commitment from a DACH-based energy infrastructure investor — a key enabler of its rapid rollout strategy.

Scale Energy currently serves over 100 industrial sites in Germany and Austria, with customers spanning paper manufacturing, automotive suppliers, aluminum producers, and more. Any industrial operator with a grid connection above 1 MW can benefit from the company’s offering.

Looking Ahead: 10 GW in Sight

This 1 GW milestone is just the beginning. Scale Energy plans to deploy up to 10 gigawatts of decentralized battery systems across Europe over the next decade — supporting a cleaner, more resilient, and economically sustainable energy future.

"At Scale Energy, we see battery storage not just as an asset — but as infrastructure for a smarter energy economy," said Elias Aruna.
"We’re building Europe's largest decentralized storage network to accelerate electrification where it counts — at the industrial edge."
